Article: Danger of Steroids

Steroids have been in the news quite a bit lately but should you teach your child about the dangers of steroids? According to the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA), approximately 500,000 8th and 10th grade students are using anabolic steroids. Adolescents only think about the short term results of taking steroids, mainly increased muscle mass and a perceived athletic performance increase. The negative effects of steroids are very serious- heart disease, liver and kidney cancer, stunted height, and risk of HIV. Another negative effect is acne, something adolescents are concerned about when they reach high school. Steroids should be included when educating your child about drugs. Some signs that your child might be taking steroids are rapid muscle growth and increased aggressive behavior. To learn more about steroid including prevention, go to the NIDA website on steroid abuse.

Article: Concussion Warning Signs

A concussion is an injury to the brain that can occur during an athletic activity. Symptoms can range from mild to severe. As a coach, player, or parents you should be aware of the signs and symptoms of a concussion. Some of these symptoms are:

1) Loss of consciousness
2) Appears dazed or confused
3) Headache
4) Dizziness
5) Nausea
6) Pupils appear different in size

If the symptoms become worse, seek medical attention immediately. If your child or player has suffered a concussion, get plenty of rest and follow the medical advice given by your doctor. Don't rush right back into an athletic activity, take time to recover and make sure your child or player has recovered full cognitive ability.
